How To Be Polite Online
So this month is “Stop Cyber-bullying month.” This is an extended post to a previous one, “Online Etiquette.” I said I would post tips on how to be polite on the world wide web and so here it is.
- Don’t be sarcastic. - Sarcasm can be interpret differently than you intended for it to be. It can be offensive and hurt other people’s feelings. It doesn’t matter whether you meant it of not, just don’t do it and there will be no chance of conflict. Solution: try to add more emotion and emoticons. Like =] or *hug*.
- Read it, re-read it, edit (if needed), then post. - Ok. So how many of you ever posted a status on Facebook and/or Twitter and totally screwed up the spelling, grammar, or doesn’t make sense at all? (Me!) That’s probably because you didn’t read it over. You want your message to be clear, so people know what you mean. I personally read over everything before I click post. Like this post right now, I’ll read it about three times and check the spelling. Besides if what you post doesn’t make sense, then you waste your time trying to explain it all over again.
- If you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say it at all. - So if you have nothing nice to say to someone, then why comment and be rude about it? This is cyber-bullying. You’re treating people with no respect. Would you want someone to comment on something that you posted and be totally rude and mean? This starts conflicts and unnecessary situations that could have been prevented if you didn’t start it. Comments should be nice and clean.
These are my main tips that I follow everyday. It’s better to make friends than enemies. Bullying is everywhere and being polite and nice on the Internet will make one less place. Simply do you and the world a favor and bring positivity, not negativity. Be one less youtuber who makes snide comments, be one less facebooker who makes someone else feel ugly, be one less bully and treat others the way you want to be treated.
